Although Calvary now has an average attendance of 160 each weekend and is growing, we strive to keep the feel of a pastoral church. By being a family, we are better able to help each other as we work together -- to lead people to God. It is important to us to get to know the other members of our parish family, to celebrate the joys of this life,  to offer support when it is needed, and to have fun together.

Calvary Church is almost a quarter of a century older than the Diocese of Albany. When it was founded in 1849, the Bishop of Maryland acted for the Bishop of New York in consecrating the Parish.  The first rector and general benefactor of the parish, The Reverend Edward Davis, DD, served the new parish for six years - and that without a salary.

The name of the carpenter/architect of the church building is unknown.  In 1877 the parish hall, a one story building with horse stalls in the sloping areas beneath, was built. A second story was added in 1895.  Heated by wood and coal burning stoves and watered by hand pumps, the hall served the church and the community as well.

As Burnt Hills and Ballston Lake experienced the post World War II building boom, the Church School burst the parish hall seams!  In 1962, the Sexton’s house was removed from the site of the present Fireside Room and the addition, including more classrooms, was built.

A fire extensively damaged the interior of the church in 1966. After careful deliberation, a decision was made to restore it. The goal of the planners was to retain the original charm of the then century old building, while improving its effectiveness by enlarging the sanctuary. That plan was finally realized with the completion of the narthex and sacristy in 1978.

As you tour our site, you will see some of the opportunities for worship and participation. We hope you will visit often to learn what is happening, and better yet, please join us in Burnt Hills - - the red carpet is always out!
